Welcome to Dorset in Focus
Dorset is a county of surprises. Most people would say Dorset is a sleepy southern county on the south coast of England. A great place to retire to. Follow us on FacebookLook a little deeper and you will learn that Dorset has a wealth of history, some stunning geology, picturesque villages, a wealth of literary heritage and much to endear it to the interested visitor. The rolling chalk landscape meets the sea along the Jurassic Coast - more correctly known as the Dorset and East Devon Coast World Heritage Site. The coast exhibits a geological timeline as you head east with major features being Golden Cap, Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door. Coastal resorts include Lyme Regis, Weymouth and Portland as well as Swanage on the Isle of Purbeck, with Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch in the far east of the county.
Inland, highlights of the county include the towns of Dorchester, Shaftesbury, Bridport, Sherborne, Beaminster and Wareham. Historians may wish to walk the Dorset Cursus, climb the Iron Age Hill Fort of Maiden Castle, view the chalk figurine at Cerne Abbas, or visit Tolpuddle and learn about the origins of the Trade Union movement. Keen gardeners may visit the gardens at Compton Acres, Knoll Gardens and Minterne whilst other visitors may like to explore the areas around Cranborne, Studland, Brownsea Island or the swannery at Abbotsbury. Writers may wish to visit the literary landscapes of Thomas Hardy.
There's so much more to Dorset than meets the eye, don't just take our word for it, dip into Dorset in Focus and see for yourselves. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
