Alum Chine

Alum Chine beach, Dorset

Granted a Blue Flag Award for 2015, Alum Chine beach is located in the West Cliff area of Bournemouth between Branksome Dene Chine and Durley Chine.

Southeast-facing, the beach is a gently sloping sand and shingle 'Blue Flag' beach, considered safe for bathing.

There is a small car park here with spaces for about 100 cars, which fills up quickly. Roadside parking is available along the West Overcliff Drive, whilst there are also various pay and display car parks.

The beach is backed by a children's playground and a sub-tropical garden, making the most of the micro-climate within the valley. A land train runs between Alum Chine and Bournemouth Pier along the promenade, and there are beach huts available to hire as well as a nearby café.

There is Lifeguard cover at Alum Chine between May 1st and September 30th. The beach is great for swimming (watercraft free zones at certain beaches), sailing, fishing, surfing, canoeing, jet skiing, windsurfing, power boating, pedalo hire and water skiing. Areas of the beach have been zoned as No Smoking and Kidzone.

A two mile (3 km.) undercliff walk leads from Fisherman's Walk east to Hengistbury Head. The Bournemouth cliffs provide an ideal habitat for the nationally rare sand lizard and smooth snake, as well as many plant species.
